Laundry, love it or hate it, is one of those chores we are all frequently doing. Here are a few everyday laundry solutions to help!
Solution: Turn them inside out before washing!
Problem: I have duvet bedding and don’t want to go to the dry cleaner every time I want to wash it.
Solution: Soak the duvet in your laundry tub, with warm water and a small amount of mild liquid detergent, stirring it around a bit. After about 5-10 minutes, drain the water, fill with a little clean water to rinse and gently hand press out the water. Then throw it into your washing machine for the spin cycle (if you had one or two small hand towels, they will help to absorb the moisture). Hang to dry.
Problem: My towels are stiff and kind of stinky (like mildew) even after a wash.
Solution: Refresh your towels with vinegar and baking soda. Quick setting wash twice – first, with one cup of white vinegar and hot water (nothing else, no detergent, etc.) and second, with one cup of baking soda and hot water. Dry as usual. In the future, do not use fabric softener often as it builds up and leaves a residue.
Problem: The inside of my washing machine smells.
Solution: Wipe down the inside using vinegar and water, including the drum gap (between the washing drum and the door where socks sometimes get stuck). Then, fill a spray bottle with 5-10 drops of Melaleuca (tea tree) oil and lightly spray the inside after every wash to keep mold and mildew away.
Okay, slightly dramatic but I think it’s important to realize that the clothes we wear, the sheets we sleep in and the towels we dry off with, have been laundered using the detergents and bleaches and softeners we choose for ourselves. This is why I take great care in using laundry products won’t cause skin issues, allergies, or sickness in general. If you or someone in your family suffers from skin issues ranging from dry or irritated skin to eczema or even seemingly unrelated allergies, this may be a big reason why!
Consider this: when we use the major grocery and box store brands, we wash our personal items with toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, phosphates, phthalates, etc. Then we place these items directly onto our bodies, against our largest organ (our skin), 24/7. Never mind skin issues, this can affect our metabolism because it can disrupt our hormones, it can weaken our immune system and perhaps even contribute to our risk of developing cancer. Did you know that the detergent brand ALL was originally developed by Monsanto?! Or, that laundry pods are sending children to the hospital every single day? Solution: choose laundry aids that are free of these chemicals!
I use laundry detergents that are free of that garbage and work just as well, in fact BETTER! Instead of using inexpensive and harsh chemicals, it uses high quality ingredients and natural enzymes to remove dirt and stains. Thankfully we have a safe option!
